Our mission
The Office of the Fire Marshal at West Florence Fire-Rescue serves the community by focusing on fire and life safety. We work to prevent fires before they start — through inspections, code enforcement, plan review, fire investigation, and public education.

What we do
Annual fire safety inspections
We conduct annual inspections of businesses within the West Florence Fire District to verify compliance with current fire and life safety codes — including the International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
Inspections check for things like clear means of egress, working alarms and sprinklers, properly tagged and accessible fire extinguishers, safe storage of flammable and combustible materials, and code-compliant electrical and cooking equipment. If we find something out of compliance, we'll explain what needs to change and give you a reasonable timeframe to address it.
Fire prevention training
The Fire Marshal's office offers free fire prevention training to businesses, schools, and the general public.
- One-hour classroom instruction covering common workplace fire hazards and how to respond
- BullEx training — a state-of-the-art digital fire-extinguisher training system that lets students practice extinguisher use on simulated fires safely (no smoke, no real flames, no cleanup)
- OSHA-compliant employee training that satisfies fire safety training requirements for most workplaces
- Tailored sessions for businesses, schools, and community groups
- Quarterly classes scheduled for private citizens
Plan review
New construction or significant renovations within our district need a fire safety plan review before work proceeds. The Fire Marshal reviews plans for code compliance — submitting early in your project saves time and reduces the chance of costly mid-build changes.
Fire investigation
After a fire, the Fire Marshal investigates to determine origin and cause. The investigation supports insurance claims, identifies hazards for community awareness, and — when warranted — assists with criminal investigations alongside law enforcement.
Schedule fire prevention training
Whether you need OSHA-compliant employee training or a hands-on extinguisher session for your team, we'll work with you to schedule a class.
Reporting a fire safety hazard
Spotted something that could be a fire hazard — blocked exits, locked egress, illegal fireworks, dangerous storage? Let us know.
- For an active emergency, call 911 first
- For a non-emergency hazard report, call (843) 665-8857 or email dwightm@westflorencefd.com
