Why become a volunteer?
Many departments rely on volunteers to answer to call for help in their communities and West Florence Fire Rescue is no different. The department provides all needed training and uniforms at no cost. There is also a paid per call program, state tax deduction, along with other special savings from serving your community.
What does it take?
The department conducts volunteer trainings on the 2nd-4th Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm.

Job information
West Florence Fire Department operates three shifts on a rotating 48-hour shift (48 hours on duty, 96 hours off duty) with shift change at 8:00am. Each shift is comprised of 6 personnel, 3 are at station 1, and 3 are at either station 2 or station 4, depending on the shift. Each crew has 1 firefighter, 1 driver, and 1 lieutenant.
The work is considered heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
West Florence Fire Department personnel respond to calls within jurisdiction for fire suppression, hazardous materials responses, rescue operations, providing crowd and traffic control at emergency scenes, providing medical assistance at the First Responder level as necessary, and performing related work as required. Hiring process
Must successfully complete the oral interview by the Hiring Committee.
Must successfully complete the West Florence Fire Dept. physical agility test.
For drivers, must successfully complete the West Florence Fire Dept. Pump Test.
Must pass WFFD Required Physical and Drug Screen. (Performed by Professional Independent Testing Company)
Requirements For Firefighter
Must be at least 18 years old.
Be a U.S. citizen.
Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Have or be able to obtain a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
Firefighter I (FFII Preferred)
Haz-Mat Ops.
NIMS: 100.b, 200.b, 700.a, 800.b
Basic Auto Extrication
EMR Certification
*All certifications must be completed through the South Carolina Fire Academy and MUST meet all NFPA, IFSAC or Pro-Board standards. (Copies of all certifications must be submitted at the time of application.)
*A 10 Year Driving Record must be submitted with the Application

Salary
Firefighter/Driver salaries will be around $34,000 - $42,000 per year depending on experience.
Junior Program
Why become a junior firefighter?
The junior firefighter program is for teens, 15 years or older, to get a sense of what being a firefighter is all about. Junior firefighters who complete there rookie sheet will receive bunker gear and will be allowed to run calls with the station crew. Juniors are also on a paid per call program and juniors who are apart of NHS and/or BETA club, can receive community service hours. The department provides all needed training and uniforms at no cost.
