Firefighter/Driver Operator Job   Description   &   Responsibilities:

Protects   citizens   during   emergencies   by   extinguishing   fires;   executing   rescues;   mitigating   chemical   spills.
Firefighter/Driver Operator   Job   Duties:
Prevents   fire   damage   by   conducting   surveys   and   inspections   for   hazards;   enforcing   codes.
Prepares   citizens   to   prevent   fire   damage   by   developing   and   conducting   educational   and   training programs.
Ensures   availability   of   water   at   fire   scene   by   testing   hydrants;   requesting   and   expediting   repairs; verifying   repair.
Minimizes   fire   damage   by   responding   to   alarms;   driving   and   operating   equipment;   regulating   water pressure;   combating   and   extinguishing   fires;   rescuing   and   reviving   people.
Ensures   operation   of   equipment   by   completing   preventive   maintenance   requirements;   following manufacturer’s   instructions;   troubleshooting   malfunctions;   notifying   supervisor   of   needed   repairs; evaluating   new   equipment   and   techniques.
Maintains   operations   by   following   policies   and   procedures;   reporting   needed   changes. Provides   information   by   completing   reports.
Maintains   technical   knowledge   by   attending   educational   workshops;   studying   publications;   participating in   scheduled   drills;   attending   advanced   training   through   the   South   Carolina   Fire   Academy
Maintains   fire   station   building,   grounds,   and   related   equipment   by   completing   maintenance   schedules.
Contributes   to   team   effort   by   accomplishing   related   results   as   needed.
Firefighters   will   work   a   24/48   schedule
Reporting   to   the   Chief   of   Department   and   assigned   Company   and   Chief   Officers   following   a   proper   chain of   command.
Work   well   with   members   of   a   combination   department   consisting   of   other   career   and   volunteer members.
Clearly   and   effectively   communicate   in   writing;   in   person,   and   via   radio. Firefighter   Skills   and   Qualifications:
Lifting,   Physical   Fitness,   Decision   Making,   Handles   Pressure,   Deals   with   Uncertainty,   Judgment, Objectivity,   Dependability,   Emotional   Control,   Integrity,   Safety   Management

1210:   Emergency   Vehicle   Driver   Training 1220:   Pump   Ops   I
1221:   Aerial   Ops   (Preferred) 2728:   Haz-Mat   Ops.
NIMS:   100.b,   200.b,   700.a,   800.b 3330:   Auto   Extrication
First   Responder/CPR
South   Carolina   Class   E   Driver’s   license
*All   certifications   must   be   through   a   recognized   Fire   Academy   and   MUST   meet   all   NFPA,   IFSAC   or Pro-Board   standards.
Copies   off   all   certifications   should   be   submitted   at   the   time   of   application. Must   satisfactorily   complete   pre-assessment   program:
-Drug-screening
-Physical/   agility   test
-Physical   Examination

Candidate process:

18 years old, high school diploma or GED, completion of application, ten year driving record, application and back-ground check and membership vote of acceptance.

Training required:

Firefighter 1 and/or Pro Board Firefighter (a must)

First Aid and CPR (preferred or will be able to get the training)

Auto Extrication (preferred or will be able to get the training)

At approximately 5:30 AM the West Florence Fire Department was dispatched to interstate 95 near the 164 mile marker for a reported 18 wheeler collision. West Florence firefighters arrived on scene to find a single vehicle collision where an 18 wheeler had left the interstate and struck a tree. The occupants of the 18 wheeler were entrapped and in serious medical condition. West Florence firefighters use the jaws of life to extricate the occupants of the 18 wheeler which was carrying U.S. Mail. DEHEC was also notified due to A diesel spill from the trucks fuel tanks. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Florence County emergency medical services are also on scene. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the SCHP. There are lane closures as a result of this incident.
