Update on American Steel and Recycling Fire:
Crews from West Florence Fire and Rescue and the City of Florence were able to contain the fire to the recycling yard. Adjacent structures were not damaged and there were no injuries.
The joint effort was aided with the use of a track excavator. As the excavator removed vehicles, crews were able to quickly extinguish them. A grueling task but a very effective tactic to begin the final knock down of the fire.
DHEC, Florence County Emergency Management and Florence County Public Works were on site to contain the wash off from the fire to prevent any contamination to ground water.
Florence County EMS crews were on site for the entire operation and maintained a close watch over the crews during rehab.
Crews cleared the site at 5:30pm.
The cause of the fire was determined accidental and started from arcing while a single vehicle was being moved for processing.
